 "my new favorite toy" 2010-06-01

By S. Martin

I bought this for my son, since we are planning a big trip and I wanted him to be able to print out his pictures along the way to make a scrapbook. However, once I opened the box and printed out my first picture I declaired it mine. The picture quality is amazing. It looks like it came from the photo lab. I love that there is just enough ink to do the number of pictures that come with the ink, so you dont run out of black but have plenty of yellow. My son loves watching it print. It pulls the paper back and forth laying down a yellow layer, then red, then blue, then a clear coat. oh yeah, these pictures are WATERPROOF! I can't tell you how happy I was about that feature after ha ving so many of my HP printer images get ruined when splashed on. After playing with this printer for a bit, I decided my mother had to have one and I also bought 4 for my job; since we need to do printing on location without a computer it is a perfect fit.

The only down side, is that the slots don't fit all memory cards. I have to plug my camera up using the USB cord, but I can flip through my pictures faster this way then when using the printer to search through the card. Also, I haven't found paper in local stores (not that I have searched them all it maybe hiding somewhere) but I anticipate having to buy the paper/ink combo mostly online. All in all, I don't think I could have asked for much more from a $50 printer!

 "Bummed a Bit" 2010-05-13

By William F. Hirsch (Suffolk, VA USA)

Bought this for my wife -

All though she is not a pro at picture taking she do take quite a lot of photos. she received this as a Mother's Day gift to replace an old HP printer she had. She was looking forward to printing some 4 x 6 photos after reading the reviews here and was not very happy with the results.

Set up was easy and that is where the honeymoon ended. She printed her 5 prints with one of them having words on it. The letters were blurry and after looking at the other pictures we noticed they were all blurry.

My wife printed the same pictures on her epson 1400 and confirmed YES they were very blurry. Her portable HP had much better print granted it was a little mor expensive 3 years ago but--- technology should be better.

She will use this printer only for wallet size pictures in her scrapbooking.

She was hoping to to use the tons of 4x6 photo paper we have but no it take special paper! another bummer.

Will not buy this again that's for sure.

This is a great portable 4x6 photo printer. The photo colors equal those of my larger, desk-bound HP photosmart printer. Easy to use and fun to take on trips.

 "wish I'd known" 2009-12-22

By gran-ma (Brooklyn, NY)

It was real easy to set up the printer, basically you just plug it in and insert the card. My only complaint is that it didn't have any ink to print the pictures! I had bought the paper, and when I tried printing, the message said "no ink" - this eventhough it said in the instructions that it comes with enough ink for at least 6 pictures. A bummer!

 "A pro photographer's handy little printer" 2009-11-30

By Christine M. May (Kansas City, MO)

I am a professional wedding & portrait photographer...specializing in quality artistic imagery. I did A TON of research online looking for an affordable, quick, and quality printer to allow me to print 4"x6" souvenir prints for wedding reception guests. I purchased this little yellow bucket Canon printer about 3 weeks before I had a big Bridal Expo and was excited to try it out on shopping Brides...giving each Bride who stopped by my booth a chance to get photographed and take home a souvenir print. I was a little nervous...since I'd never EVER done on-location printing, let alone on a new product and experimenting on 3000+ potential new clients. ...I was amazing at that little printer...it ran, pretty much non-stop, for 6 hours...printing back to back. I ended up printing about 200 prints that day.

I used a Canon 5D mark II camera, wirelessly triggering a strobe studio light, hooked up by cord to the Canon Selphy printer...and would just the direct printing option via the playback on LCD screen.

Pros: Small & portable, SUPER easy use (print directly by Canon camera, or plug in memory card), good quality prints

Cons: It took a little longer than I expected each print would take. I was printing directly from my camera and didn't realize until beginning that I wasn't able to take another picture until the current image was done printing. That was a big draw back when I had a very long line of Brides waiting for their turn to be photographed. I didn't time it exactly, but I think it look a minute or over to produce each print.

Considering the other products in the price range, this was the perfect printer for the job...I just need to order a second one and have two cameras going the next time I have such a large event.

 "A dream come true!" 2010-05-17

By Brian (Los Angeles, CA)

This printer blew me away! Wow, I've had it for a few weeks now, and I can't find anything to complain about, except the software it comes with: on some prints which had areas of solid color, that color DID NOT come out the same on different prints, even though the color was absolutely identical (same rgb values in Photoshop for instance). However, printing those same tiff images from photoshop produced identical solid color on different prints. So, the problem is their software. However this is not a deal braker for me in any way as I don't even like the way their software works. Not to mention that photoshop interface for this printer is actually better then canon standalone software: it has more options and everything is intuitive and simple.

From the first moment, the easy of use, setup, and above all - quality of print results have been nothing short of extraordinary. I was very close to buying a three times more expensive Epson printer, as I do a lot of photography and am glad I don't have to spend my days and nights going blind in a darkroom. This is the first time that I can say with confidence that color photography, as a wet process, is dead. I will do some comparisons to some cibas I have from years ago and if this thing manages to pull at least similar quality, I will be in heaven, as great cibachromes not only cost an arm and a leg, but there are very few (im)mortals on this planet who know how to do them well...

All in all, if you are considering this printer, think no more, but take advantage of the great deal they are having right now. I got mine for $350 after rebate which is an incredible deal.

BTW, so far I printed about 25 8x10 color photographs, mostly for fun, and they came out absolutely stunning. With some older bubble jets, this would be the end of my color cartridge, but when I check the ink level, it shows that nothing was used up! I am almost inclined to believe that something's wrong with the software and that there is much less ink left than what it's telling me. So I will see how many prints I do before I have to buy more print cartridges and will add that info here at a later date. I will be doing a lot of printing in the next few weeks so new inks will be in order soon I imagine.

However, if inks are really still almost full as it's telling me, then that would be nothing short of a miracle.

This is my second canon medium format printer. It not only can print in the larger format for us hobbiests but I also use it for work here at home. It's fast for work and does an outstanding job on photos. My last canon lasted for over 14,000 copies both photos and documents. I've had this printer for 8 months and with daily use I have not had a bit of problem. I even have used 140# cover weight paper with no problem. I highly recommend this printer.

"Great Printer but So-So Color Controls" 2010-04-28

By Alphia D. Larkins (Acworth, Georgia United States)

I have had the Pixma Pro9000MrkII for only two weeks. I am replacing my beloved Canon i9900 that I have/had used for a little over five years and had never had to take it in for a single repair until a few weeks ago and was told it needed a new Print Head, and my husband opted to buy a new one rather than have the i9900 repaired because he was afraid something else would "go out" on it and he would have to have more repairs done. But though I like this one, some things I liked better on my old Canon. There is a problem (it is a problem to me, maybe others have figured out a way to overcome it) but the colors print out too dark and color seems too saturated when I print personal photos from the computer. I have went into the area where I thought I would be able to control the colors, but it was not simple for me to do and not being a professional photographer (as so many of the other reviewers that I have read reviews from here claim to be) I do not know how nor what place to go to change the quality or the tone, whatever it is that I need to change. The colors are too dark, I need to lighten up skin tones, etc.and I think maybe better contrast. When I still had the i9900, which I did right after Christmas this past year (2009 and early 2010) I had a lot of picures that I had taken of my family at Christmas and it was very easy to adjust color on it and lighten the skin tones when the picture was too dark. I know this is painting me as a rank amateur and that is exactly what I am but I have been printing photographs on my printers for years and they were fine and now all of a sudden, I buy a new printer, just an updated version of my old one and should be as good, and probably would be if I could just figure out how to get the color printing for the photos to look better. It is fine for everyday printing of text and so on, but then, I could have bought a small fifty or sixty dollar printer to do that. I have an HP photo printer that still works fine but after I bought the i9900 I just stopped using the HP because the Canon was easier to use, I liked the ease of printing on the Canon as opposed to the HP, the paper loading was easier and the controls easier to get to, etc., but the print quality was almost as good on the HP as on the i9900 but it was easier for me to stick to one or the other so I chose to stick with the Canon. But I am not quite as pleased with the new Canon Pro9000. I was expecting so much more from it after reading the glowing reviews here that made it sound like the quality would be drastically improved with this new one but that has not been the case. I have to get this color corrected! Can anyone out there help me? Any advice or suggestions? Thanks.

"Slick interface, good packaging, doesn't work" 2010-05-07

By Wog B (JERSEY CITY, NJ)

Looks like a decent design, and for the money, it didn't look like I could go too wrong with this printer. But...

1) Bluetooth recognizes iPhone, but iPhone will not send or print to it. Given time I would probably figure it out, but some online tips would be helpful as this is a rather common phone now.

2) Bluetooth does not work with laptop computers, only camphones (?!?).

3) Finally got to printing with the old fashioned cord. No need for CD install was a nice touch, but the dealbreaker was that the cartridge refused to align. Despite repeated cleanings and many glossy test prints, the cyan never appeared, only magenta and yellow. So I can't really comment on photo quality or printer features.

4) Test page. Note to HP: why bother letting people print a test page [...] without giving them a cheat sheet to understand the error codes? All that effort to make the installation easy and I am given this on the test page: "0000072450 2 Failure NOT due to spot cal, wrong medi".

I did some searching before posting the review and at least a couple of others have reported a similar problem. I will be taking this one back.

"Great little printer for the price!" 2010-05-02

By Betsy Williams (Chesapeake, VA)

I wanted a printer that was easy to use, produced high quality prints, and printed directly from my camera. I found all of these features in this printer. With the touch screen control panel, I can select a photo from my memory card and apply special effects. I normally frame my photo and include some text. The outcome is GREAT!!

The touch screen is a bit small. With my over 40 eyes, it is difficult to see clearly. I also wish there were a few more options on the special effects panel. I would like to be able to save a template because with my use, I normally select the same options each time.

But overall, a great product, great price, easy to install and use.

"Installation problems keep this from being a 5 star review!" 2010-04-23

By Kyle E. Higgins (Beacon Falls, CT)

I purchased the A646 to replace an older photosmart that died. The printer does a fine job when I print directly from a flash drive or memory card... but it just will not install so I can print from my laptop. I have searched and tried everyone's suggestions (HP Support being the LEAST useful) with no luck. The auto install feature would be great if it worked, but it installs the printer as a digital camera that you can't access. Plus... I printed 22 pics and got a low ink message and reminders to replace the cartridge...

This printer is going back!

"Great way to get hardcopies of all those digital photos." 2010-02-04

By T. Paslay

Digital cameras are both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, they allow you to take great quality pictures ad nauseum without having to buy film, lug the rolls with you on vacations/family gatherings or wait for the pictures to be processed. On the other hand, how many of you have SD cards FULL of unprinted memories? Me too.

I have a nice HP Deskjet hooked up to my home network, but it always seems like a pain to copy the pictures over, load the printer with 4x6 or 5x7 paper and set it up for borderless picture printing. Well, I am pleased to say that the HP Photosmart A646 Compact Photo Printer has solved that problem. It has SD card slots so I can just remove my SD card from my camera, plug it in and there are all my pictures. The LCD display is very nice quality and allows you to make (minor) on the fly adjustments to the pictures (i.e. red eye reduction, contrast, dark/light etc). Then just print and like a flash it prints out very nice quality prints. It's incredibly easy to use and set up. It has a port in the back for a USB printer cable, should you choose to print from your PC. I use Windows 7 and had no problems with recognition. The bluetooth was a bit temperamental with my fiancé's G1. It would pair but had trouble connecting. Not a big deal, as anything we take a picture of with our camera phones is probably not worth printing anyway. If it is, we can just email it to ourselves and print it out from the PC in a matter of minutes.

It comes with a nice compact carrying bag that will hold an extra cartridge and the power cable and, of course, the printer. It's all very lightweight, but solidly constructed. The cartridges apparently print 50 photos. Not great in my opinion, but the quality is at least as good as if you took them to your nearest drugstore or retailer to print. The price for the ink and photo paper may exceed taking them somewhere however. You'll have to weigh cost vs. convenience in this case.

Ultimately, for a printer in this category, the HP Photosmart A646 Compact Photo Printer does the job and does it VERY well. The only negative thing I can say about it is the cost of use may outweigh the convenience. However, the quality of the product, the features it offers and the quality of prints it produces will make this a great choice for those who want a compact photo printer that can be thrown in a bag and taken wherever they need to go.

Watch DVD Movies On Your iPod

An iPod or other portable MP4 media player is easier to carry around than a portable DVD player, but it can't play DVDs directly. However, it's still possible to watch your favorite DVDs on your iPod. All you need to do is to convert the DVD to an iPod compatible format. If you search the web for "video conversion software" you'll be overwhelmed by the choice of products available. Many video conversion products are general purpose tools that require you to know details of the formats you want to convert between, and baffle you with jargon about things like codecs. Such products may be very good, but if you want to be sure that the copies you are making are optimised for your iPod, or you simply want to make the task as easy as possible, it's best to choose a dedicated DVD to iPod converter. Using a DVD to iPod converter really is simplicity itself. You launch the software, insert the DVD in the drive, and the title screen appears in a window. Using the mouse, you select the episode or feature you want to see from the DVD menu, just as with a DVD player. When the movie starts to play, you click a Convert button and select a folder for the output. The amount of time conversion takes depends on the power of your computer. On a modern computer it can be faster than real time, but using an older one it may actually be slower. After conversion is complete, you are offered the option to start iTunes and upload the converted movie to your iPod. That's all there is to it! Give it a try, and you'll soon be watching your favorite movies on your iPod media player.

 "Excellent Prints, A Little Expensive Over-All" 2009-09-14

By Alaina J. Rogers (The Great Pacific Northwest)

I read the reviews before buying this printer and I was not disappointed in the quality of prints! They are amazing! I am, however, disappointed that I can't seem to get more than 70-80 prints out of one ink cartridge. That factor, along with the expense of even cheap photo paper, equals an expensive set of prints! I have resolved to print on it occasionally, but I continue to shop for online deals, such at 10 cents a print, because these turn out to be much cheaper in the long run.

"Thde Little Printer That Could" 2009-05-28

By Constance D., Harvey (Wayne, MI USA)

A very good little printer, easy to carry around and can be set up just about anywhere. However, there needs to be a way to edit photos that are being down loaded and printed on site from a memory card. After shooting a fashion show, although I had the printer with me, I had to take the card home and download on my home printer to edit, before printing. The first photos that were taken of the models were too dark when just downloaded and printed on site. I also have to use my home printer if I need a 8X10. That is okay, I mainly print 4 X 6 and 5 X 7, anyway. Another concern was the photo paper, this little number only prints on canon paper. HP paper causes the ink to smear. I can only use cannon paper in this printer

 "More than I expected." 2009-05-12

By R. VanCamp (Virginia)

I received a Canon PIXMA mini320 about a month ago. It took a little minute to read the manual and get it all set up, but after that, it is a breeze to operate. The picture quality is as good as I have ever seen anywhere using the PhotoPlus glossy paper. So far I have printed sixty-two 4x6 pictures with one ink cartridge, and showing two bars left on the screen. Of course the advantage of using a printer like this is you can print anything you want to and have it in your hands in a minute. I can't imagine how a photo printer could be better than this one unless you want to print larger than 5x7. I have sets of professional prints that aren't a speck better than the ones I've printed out. I am printing directly from my computer, so don't know about prints from other devices. It meets my needs. On the other hand, I should add that if you want good prints the first half of the battle is starting out with decent photos, and the second all-important part is to have a quality editing program such as Photoshop Elements, or at least Picasa 3, which is a free download.
